Resources for Startups

We advocate for a thoughtful progression through the following phases when creating a shelter program. Continuous learning is also essential. Here are a few of the resources we have vetted and recommend.

Discernment Phase

You believe God has called you to this work, but you’re seeking clarity on how.

Moran, Rachel.  Paid For, 2015 – an incredible survivor story that intelligently lays out the issues and challenges of this population and this work.

Preparation Phase

You are forming your leadership team and defining who and how you will serve.

2017 Practices Survey – national survey of residential service providers for victims of trafficking. Useful for grasping the complexities and range of issues you need to be considering (PDF)

Provision Phase

You are lining up your resources, staffing, partners, and funding strategy.

Program Phase

You are into the “nuts and bolts” of what your program will offer and how you will respond to victim needs.

Herman, Judith Lewis, M.D., Trauma and Recovery. New York: Basic Books, 1997 – a very dense read, but exceptional grasp of the trauma experienced by this population

Van der Kolk, Bessel, MD., The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.  Viking Press, 2014 – helpful for considering some of these practices for your program

Operating Phase

Your program is up and running, and you need to keep learning.

Langberg, Diane Mandt, PhD, Counseling Survivors of Sexual Abuse. Zulon Press, 2003 – our favorite Christian therapist who really understands this population
